A Waterloo staple since 1960, this locally-owned diner offers handmade hash browns and some of the biggest pancakes in Iowa. Lunch offers classics like beef and potatoes or homemade chili. Arrive early because this place is a favorite among the locals and often fills up fast.
Sidecar coffee – Sidecar Coffee opened their first roasting facility in November 2012. Their carefully selected special coffees are from around the world and roast in small batches to maximize their potential. Handcrafted coffee is available at Waterloo’s two cafe locations.
Carpenters
Matthew comes from a family of restaurateurs. His great grandpa operated a diner on the west side of town, and in 1972 his grandpa had the Eastside Carpenter’s.
“When my grandpa passed away in 2012, my grandma retired and shut the restaurant down and then we reopened in 2023.”
We do sell a lot of pancakes and hashbrowns—that’s what we’re known for, so I probably make like six gallons of maple syrup a week, probably 15 gallons of pancake mix, 250 pounds of hash browns.”
