How to Plan a Lost Island Vacation: What to Know Before You Go
One of the most important first steps in planning a trip to Waterloo is deciding which "island" experience fits your travel party.
While both parks sit side-by-side, they offer very different ways to spend your day. Are you looking for the high-energy thrill of a world-class theme park, or a laid-back afternoon drifting through a tropical oasis? Choosing the right pace sets the tone for your entire visit.
Choose Your Adventure
Not all "island days" are created equal. If your family loves nonstop action and immersive storytelling, the Themepark is your destination. With five distinct realms based on the elements of Air, Earth, Water, Fire, and Spirit, it’s designed for those who want to feel like they’ve stepped into another world.
For guests who prefer to soak up the sun and enjoy a more relaxed pace, the Waterpark offers that signature tropical service with beachside settings and plenty of ways to stay cool. Thinking about what matters most—thrills, relaxation, or family exploration—will guide your decision on which park to visit first (or if you need a multi-day pass to do both!).
Timing Your Visit
When you choose to travel can help tailor the experience to your specific needs. Many factors, like crowd levels and seasonal events, play a role in shaping your day at both the Waterpark and Themepark. The early season begins in late May, with the Themepark kicking off the year with select weekend operations starting May 23. This is the perfect time for coaster enthusiasts to get their first rides in on the award-winning Fire Runner. Early June marks the official start of daily operations for both the Waterpark and the Themepark. Weekdays during this time are often a great choice for those looking to enjoy shorter wait times for the Wailua Kupua water coaster or the Matugani launch coaster.
The peak of summer in July and August is when the island truly comes alive. On the Waterpark side, the tropical sun makes the Kailahi River the place to be, while the Themepark hosts Cinder Fest on Friday and Saturday nights from July 3 to August 15, offering fire performances and the unique chance to experience the realms under the stars until 9:30 PM.
Experience Waterloo Pro Tip: Staying Close to the Magic
Where you stay is part of the experience, and choosing a location close to the parks can make your trip feel much more seamless. The Lost Island KOA is a top pick for families who want to stay close to the action. It offers a variety of "glamping" options and traditional sites, keeping you immersed in the outdoor atmosphere. The campgrounds also feature a shuttle to and from the parks! Alternatively, the Isle Casino Hotel is located right across the street and is a great choice for those looking for resort-style amenities and convenient proximity to the park gates.
What to Book Ahead
Understanding what to book before you arrive is one of the most helpful parts of planning. Purchasing your admission online in advance can often save you time at the gate. You should also check the calendar for special promotions, like the Memorial Weekend Special at the Themepark or the My Waterloo Days "Buy Two, Get One Free" deal on June 5. If you are visiting the Waterpark on a July weekend, cabanas are a "must-book" item. They provide a guaranteed shaded home base for your group.
