George Wyth State Park

Nestled on the edge of Waterloo, George Wyth State Park offers a remarkable escape into nature without ever leaving the city. This expansive 1,200-acre "urban sanctuary" provides a diverse range of recreational opportunities and a haven for abundant wildlife, making it a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike.

A Rich History

The park's story began in 1940 when it was dedicated as "Josh Higgins Parkway," named after a popular radio character. However, in 1956, it was rightfully renamed George Wyth Memorial State Park, honoring a prominent Cedar Falls businessman and conservationist who championed outdoor recreation and preservation in Iowa. This foresight ensured that as the surrounding cities grew, a significant natural space would remain for generations to enjoy.

Trails for Every Adventure

Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or an invigorating bike ride, George Wyth State Park has a trail for you. The park boasts 3.5 miles of paved multi-purpose trails, ideal for biking, in-line skating, running, and walking. For those seeking a more rugged experience, over 10 miles of soft trails wind through woodlands, offering a chance to truly immerse yourself in nature. These trails are also part of a larger 100-mile network connecting various parks, lakes, and urban areas within Waterloo and Cedar Falls, providing endless possibilities for exploration. In winter, these trails transform into a wonderland for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
